What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance is an essential policy that safeguards against unexpected financial losses, medical emergencies, and trip disruptions during your travels. Typically costing between 4 to 10% of your total trip cost, it offers valuable coverage for risks such as trip cancellation, emergency medical care, medical evacuation, and lost luggage. This protection is crucial for covering health-related expenses that may not be included in provincial or private plans, ensuring peace of mind while you explore the world.

Save on Medical Emergency's

Who should get travel insurance?

Eeryone traveling outside their home province or country should consider travel insurance, as standard government healthcare plans should consider travel insurance, as standard government healthcare plans (like OHIP in Ontario) often provide very little or no coverage once you cross borders. This also includes those who are young and healthy.

What could happen if you go out of the country uninsured?

Going out of the country uninsured exposes you to significant financial and logistical risks, as most foreign hospitals require immediate upfront payment and will not recognize your home country's healthcare plan. This includes having to pay high medical bills, upfront costs and evacuation expenses, without any support.

Key Considerations for Travel Insurance Buyers:

1. Timing of Purchase:

You should purchase Trip Cancellation insurance as soon as you book your trip to protect against events occurring before you leave. Medical insurance can often be bought up until the day of departure.

2. Existing Coverage:

Check your credit cards or employee benefits; they may already include some travel insurance. However, verify if the limits, trip duration, or specific activities (like extreme sports) are sufficient for your needs.

3. Pre-existing Conditions:

Most policies exclude pre-existing medical conditions unless they meet specific "stability" requirements (e.g., no new treatments or symptoms for a set period).

4. Exclusions:

Standard policies often do not cover high-risk activities (e.g., skydiving), drug/alcohol-related incidents, or elective procedures.
